At the start of this gig, you wouldn't be mistaken if you had thought that the entire cast of the IT Crowd has just walked on the stage - ok, this was mainly because of one of the keyboardists was wearing a white lab coat and specs, and they weren't dolled up. But ladies and gentlemen, who gives a toss?
URBAN MYTH CLUB gave us a near-Heaven experience with their heady ambience, gently fried trip-hop, and expansive audio landscapes. Enough to knock anyone's socks off. Soporific, ethereal, jazzy in places, sultry in others - they look like the Beautiful South, and they sound similar to bands such as Lamb and Morcheeba, and their music could probably sit nicely on any Sci-Fi movie. Maybe.
Anyway, this wouldn't be surprising, given that the UBC was born out of the enigmatically named Dezz, and Stephen Barton - a Hollywood film composer, who apparently took time out to write music for Shrek. After which, apparently, the rest of the band came on board with a sack full of posh credentials, proving that they really know their stuff and they could well achieve 'Supergroup' status - and whaddya know, their music is now all over the shop, and on a wide range of stations - from XFM to Classic FM. Marvellous.

Their live performance was spot on - the only problem being a distinct lack of beanbags and sofas to fall back on (in the Water Rats, you're lucky to get a bar stool, and your feet tend to stick to the floor, so lying down isn't an option). They opened with the delicious 'e+umc2', which gently lulled everyone into a tripped-out state of bliss, and continued to gently stroke the psyche and soothe the soul, but sadly the set was only 30 minutes long - and onlookers became so relaxed that facing London traffic afterwards became a dangerous ordeal.
So, if you're in need of some therapy, forget valium, chocolate won't do it, a glass of wine might, but catch these guys live and you'll definitely be on the right tracks. But try to avoid busy roads afterwards.
