The duo of Ian McKenzie & Nick Varney make IDM/electronica which is a cut above the average. I really like the way the timing unfolds from the disjointed random synth start, before a rhythm shuffles in most attractively.
Influenced by all the usual classic leftfield electronica innovators – Aphex Twin, FSOL, Autechre et al, Schengen plays with rhythms in a nicely disjointed way, & this is definately the prime weapon in their arsenal; above melodic content, which although very good, seems a bit basic at times. The record is overall very warm & fuzzy, although of course there are sharp edges to watch out for. Abstract stoned vocal samples abound & simplistic melodies skip alongside the offit percussion. Reminds me of Susuma Yukota a lot – I’d be surprised if they don’t have the full catalogue. Certainly late night or early morning music for when you really, really should go to bed…in a minute…what was I doing? Where are the Rizlas…
