Our Rating:
When John Southworth from Canada sings he’s going to open a general store in your town, an image of Mr Rogers (That’s the late and legendary American PBS children TV presenter) and Raffi comes to mind.

No…it doesn’t sound naff, twee or indeed silly. The opposite is true. His songs are filled with a child like honesty and wonder which had me singing along(and that takes some doing believe me). No surprise then that John cites “Bird songs, nursery rhymes, fairy tales and old inn songs” as inspiration.

“I have tried to make a record in the hopes of rekindling a lost sense of innocence, tenderness and green magic” he says. He has achieved this by the bucket load.

I can hear Cat Stevens, The Colour-blind James Experience (remember them?) Tom Petty and Burt Bacharach all mixed together in songs about applecarts, small country airports and gentle giants. Beautifully recorded on two-inch analogue 16-track this eccentric, joyful and heartfelt collection of songs is a perfect antidote for anyone in need of unwinding and rejuvenation. What a great record.
