Review: 'WASTER'
'York, Fibbers'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '1/7/02'

Our Rating:
WASTER are up next, big scary rock blokes with stealth beards and huge tattoos. Not since Tad or Dandelion Adventure have I seen such a huge singer – he fills the stage and I’m reminded of Robbie Coltrane’s recent turn in Harry Potter as the giant Hagrid. Bloody hell – he’s huge! I remember to take photos of this band just so you can see what I mean. The first song, “Losing Your Hair” shows that this is an older band, with different concerns -I suspect most of Duck Sick don’t even shave, let alone examine their scalps in mirrors yet! They play melodic pop-imbued punk, reminiscent of the Grant Hart- penned Husker Du songs, with pounding drums and shouty, but tuneful vocals with a touch of The Sex Pistols at their Matlock line-up best.

A broken string causes a slight delay and then it’s mosh time again, playing songs that I suppose remind me of The Buzzcocks more than anything else although displaced through other more recent American skate punk bands out to have a good time. I’m sure, given the right opportunities, they could do well, especially if they develop something to make them stand out from the crowd. They certainly fill the stage more physically than DUCK SICK, although they don’t have quite as much actual stage presence. Their encore features a very cool feedback and bass workout, providing an excellent finish to a good set.
