Review: 'FIVE O'CLOCK HEROES'
'Skin Deep'

-  Label: 'Glaze Records (www.thefiveoclockheroes.com)'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '19th March 2007'-  Catalogue No: 'Glaze08CD'

Our Rating:

The latest single from this NYC-based anglo-American quartet continues the late 70’s take on rock n roll admirably well. ‘Skin Deep’ comes complete with a “Whoa-ohh-ahh-ohhh” vocal refrain after a split-second pause for thought, and there are deep semi-acoustic melodies behind a rumbling bassline and jagged rhythm playing that kind of crashes the whole offering on the table.

It’s instantly recognisable, with a singalong chorus and some timeless bouncing bits that collide in gain-heavy feedback, and it’s sure to be a big hit with the radio stations. Anthony Ellis has a vocal style that is decently suited to the crashing power of guitar music like this, which pogos into view messily on the back of some demented posturing.

It ain’t got a trace of originality about it, but it’s good, and addictive. Why fix it if it ain't broke?
