Review: 'GREIG, PAUL'
'Rush of Goodness'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '2006'

Our Rating:
"Rush of Goodness" is certainly an apt title for an album of subtle, bittersweet charms as this. In some ways the record reminds me of the films of Bill Forsyth with its easygoing simplicity and sunny demeanor.

As a vocalist, Paul Greig (http://www.paulgreig.com.au) will not knock you out; then again, he isn't calling attention to himself. Rather, the emphasis is placed on the evocative guitar work, which conveys a number of different emotions in an image-laden, cinematic manner. Particularly delicious are the dreamy wonders of "Lone Star" and "Sugar Cane Lady"; both have ethereal, softly romantic textures that transcend their folk and country roots.

Greig makes music to stargaze by; this is a record that you should bring into the woods when you're camping. At times, Greig recalls G. Love's potent brew of hip-hop beats and blues, especially on the upbeat "Dance My Fools" and "Mercury Rise" with its electrifying percussion.
