Distorted melodies add an odd contrast to the atonal pre-chorus in this darkened, devils’ eye view of life. ‘Settle Down’ is a very catchy indie/rock hybrid with a TV advert guitar hook and a pedestrian structure that sounds very happy where it is thank you, despite the howling hookline that claims to the contrary.
That isn’t to say that it there’s anything wrong with it. Judged on Top 40 worthiness, it scores high, as the record carries a broad appeal, based on solid foundations (The Rolling Stones school of rock n roll would have made them prefects). It’s just that it doesn’t make any claim for itself, or take the three-minute chance it has to step forward and grab you.
In terms of what the band is capable of, it’s an unimpressive choice of release in almost every respect, as they are so much better than this record would have you believe.
