Review: 'Mosquito'
'The Crying Girl'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '18th June'

Our Rating:
It was clear from his performance on Saturday night hit ‘Any Dream Will Do’ that Seamus Cullen had a great voice, but with his band Mosquito the soulful singer merges his own rich vocals with fresh guitar grooves and smooth indie licks. ‘The Crying Girl’ EP opens with ‘Annual Leave’ a sumptuous mix of impassioned vocals and sultry guitars, while the title track departs from this sleek, flowing sound with an angst-filled chorus that lets Seamus’ vocals reach their heady peak, soaring into a heavenward realm during the final crescendo. Choppy guitars add to the tension, paired with a rippling, raw verse that carries you blissfully along as the pace climbs ever higher to the jagged chorus.

‘Heal Me’ is a classic ballad with lyrics like “You have a way of getting under my skin” and a funk twist from roaming guitars. The tunes all have definite theatrical overtones with sudden changes of pace that rush at you with force, especially during this closer which builds to a raging peak with sweeping vocals; the drama is enough to have you quaking in your seat from the pure power.

Mosquito have a gripping sound with enough intriguing tunes to match if this EP is anything to go by.
