Review: 'Paw Paw'
'Wired OK'

-  Label: 'Albino Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '16 July 2007'

Our Rating:
[PAW PAW] / paw paw/ noun.
1.     A papaya fruit native to the temperate woodlands of the eastern U.S. Common name: Pawpaw, Poor Man’s Banana, or the Hoosier Banana.
2.     A couple of padded, clawed feet of a lion, dog, or other animal.
3.     To feel, grope, or touch somebody clumsily or indecently. Twice.
4.     A snazzy electro-pop outfit set to take the London music scene by storm.

Opting to discuss the latter - you’ll need to check out a different site if you want to talk about exotic fruit and indecent groping - we’ll have a chat about the glorious glitterball that is Paw Paw.

To date, they’ve already gathered accolades from Electro Eminents such as Paddy Boom (Scissor Sisters), who raves: “You’d better be cranking up Paw Paw, blowing the speakers and pissing off the neighbours, cos man, they are rockin!”

By contrast, Moby shows his age by conservatively stating: “I really think you should check out Paw Paw.” No doubt that was before he took another puff on his pipe and started to read the business section of The Times.

The fact that Mackenzie Crook directed the video for their debut single “Wired OK” didn’t hurt. I’m no film critic, but it was rather good. It reminded me very much of the video to Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer”, but with less cockroaches and more keyboards.

Drawing their influences from Depeche Mode (which we like… very much), Heaven 17, Scissor Sisters, Human League - you know, the usual suspects - and their more modern counterparts such as Temposhark, they create the right blend of synth-driven funk and pop, the end result being a sound with more hooks than a velcro strip, and fabulously catchy melodies.

Like the ever effervescent Pet Shop Boys and the long gone Gay Dad, Paw Paw have their origins well and truly set in the media. Is this relevant?
Well, if the music was pants then perhaps. But in this case frankly my dear we don’t give a damn.

“Wired OK” is a superb single, with hip-grinding beats, chic vocals, and is more catchy than the common cold. We think it’s a club classic in the making.

So what are you waiting for? Go check them out. You know you want to.
