Review: 'BLUEHAT'
'The Sun and the Moon'

-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '2007'

Our Rating:
With a name like Bluehat (http://www.sunsetmusic.com), you'd probably expect a blues artist. Not quite, but Bluehat is still definitely in the roots-rock mold albeit more commercial in the '70s sense of the word. If I was to compare Bluehat with anybody, it'd probably be like groups such as Poco and the Eagles, that sort of laidback mix of Adult Contemporary and country music.

"The Sun and the Moon" is an album that you listen to when you're exhausted from work and need some sought-after relaxation. There's a calming quality to Bluehat's voice that is undeniable; it brushes the ears softly, even when it is yearning for love such as on "Do Sing for Me." A part of me wants to classify this as Americana but Bluehat's country flavors are not as traditional as others within that genre; it's more polished, more pop. This is evident on "Do Sing for Me" and "Kindness," both of which would've fit onto AM soft-rock radio in the '70s.

Despite the commercial inspirations, Bluehat's lyrics seem personal and are more subtle than yesteryear's radio fodder. "Kindness," for example, praises a woman's heart more than her beauty. It's a song that one could imagine James Taylor singing a few decades ago. Certainly, Bluehat has a voice warm enough to deserve such comparisons.

"Gold" and "This Love Thing" both have driving country-based rhythms that'll satisfy fans looking for more of that direction. For me, I prefer Bluehat in his gentle romantic stages like on the title cut, which is utterly gorgeous.
