Our Rating:
JetKing are a Bristol-based band that play what they call "Indie / Electronica". I would say its more electro than electronica, but I won't split hairs...

The first thing that strikes you about the EP is the packaging - its a flexible round clamshell case with a nice sticker on the front of the case with a monkey on it, the track listing, band logo and web addresses. Its simple, but effective.

On putting the EP into my PC to play it, a menu popped up with extra features (bonus tracks, lyrics and pictures), but more ont his later.

First track is "In the Land of Monkeys", a fine opener and a slightly slackeresque programmed drumbeat remenicent of Beck leads the track to a loping start, coupled with a chunky but strangley angular guitar line. This is rapidly joined by funky grooving bass, bloopy squelchy synth and interesting vocals. Nice.

Next up is "Instinct", far more overtly electronic than its predecessor and quite manic indeed on the choruses. It reminds me of Primal Scream crossed with Feeder with a dose of techno along the way. As odd as this sounds, it does actually work, although not as obviously strong a track as "Monkeys".

Last up (as far as traditional audio tracks goes) is a track entitled "Ways (Hangnail Mix)". A fatter slab of Triphop / Drum and Bass-inflected indie madness I have never heard - WATCH OUT, KLAXONS, JETKING ARE COMING TO GET YOU!

There's three extra tracks as MP3s on the data part and some pretty pictures too. On the strength of the basic 3 EP tracks alone, I'd say it definately warrants a listen. Add the extra multimedia content and I'd say you'd be a fool to pass on it.

The EP is available via the band's online shop - www.shop.jetking.info.

A little band soon to be much bigger, I think.

Summing up in 2 words - "Refreshingly different".
