Review: 'BOULLE, MARK'
'ALL THE LEAVES ARE FALLING DOWN'

-  Label: 'Waterfront Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'October 2007'

Our Rating:
Mark Boulle is a singer songwriter from the Gold Coast, Australia who performs and records solo and with his band the Haba Dudes.

Boulle has spoken of how important it is for him sometimes to work alone, saying in one interview how easy it is to "get overwhelmed with other people's opinions and lose sight of where you want to go creatively".

This sentiment is the essence of the song 'SeIl My Soul' in which he admits "I've never been a fighter ,I've always been a dreamer" yet still expresses a firm resolve to hold on to his own ideas and avoid compromising to meet other peoples' expectations.

Actually, he's not quite solo on this album as he's backed by bassist Daren Williams and violinist Elodie Mayberry. The decision to broaden the palate to include elements other than his own voice, guitar and piano is crucial to the success of this record. The contribution of Mayberry on violin in particular adds a beautifully lyrical dimension to these well crafted tunes.
The songs have elements of folk but their immediacy and warmth mean they have more in common with the world of pop.

At first the they sound deceptively simple and even novelty-ish. but after a few plays their hidden depths are revealed.

Boulle has a natural talent for songwriting that manages to sidestep all the tired clichès to give personal and personable reflections on the world around him. He comes across as is a relaxed and likeable host who is keen to enjoy life but suspicious of superficial pleasures.

A fragile , reflective tone is established on tracks like 'A Few Things' and 'Wait for Nothing'. One repeated line in the latter - "I wait for nothing but I hope there's something" sets out his stall as a laid back observer with a philosophical bent.

This also extends into political territory on 'Lost Cause' where he sings of a hatred for "dirty wars" and where a humdrum problem from daily life is used to symbolise a wider malaise: "I've forgotten my briefcase code and all I need is a kitchen knife and I will open up this world of hate for you"

My personal favourite is a touching breakup song 'You Are Not Like The Rest' where lines like "Thank you for the times that we had" are full of regret but free of bitterness.

This album was self funded, and recorded and produced at Boulle's home. If there was any justice in the world it is a record that would earn his fortune. As it is, the likelihood is that it will gain a small but appreciative following.

Take time to seek it out and you'll be rewarded with a record that restores your faith in the healing power of pop music.
