I didn’t quite know what to think when Planet Zebidee popped through my door the other day, I read the accompanying press release twice before putting it in the CD drawer and am glad that I did, I probably would have turned it off after a couple of tracks otherwise. I should fill you in, I’m not a big electronica fan, I try to keep an open mind when I’m listening to or reviewing music but I’ve never really heard anything from the genre that particularly excited me.
After reading the press release and discovering that Planet Zebidee is a concept album and relates to the listener an aural journey of a space explorer to a new planet, I was slightly bemused by the idea and thought it sounded a bit too wacky to work. However, I put the CD on and sat still for the next ten minutes listening intently. I have to say, the music really works, I was trying to force the image of space into my mind when listening to the record but with a quick scan of the accompanying booklet I was quite able to picture many of the concepts put forward in the music.

I allowed my mind to wander further and conjured up a number of images of my own, most of them dark and futuristic. Now I can’t say that I’m a converted fan to the sounds of the electronica genre, but I did enjoy the listening experience that accompanied this album and it made me feel much the same way as I do when listening to an LP; involved. This is not music you could put on your iPod and listen to on the train, this is not music you could listen to on ‘shuffle’, this is music that you have to sit down, listen to and evaluate and music like that is the reason I started reviewing music.
I would strongly recommend this to anyone with an open mind and of course anyone who already likes electronica should enjoy it too.
