Our Rating:
If anyone has stumbled across this review by accident, then I recommend that you check the review of Laguna Meth's debut full-length, called 'Laguna the Puma' (the name of course is discussed at length in the review), from which 'Sugar Shack' is taken.

In light of what else is to be discovered on the full-length by Laguna Meth, 'Sugar Shack' is the most-likely to succeed as a single, if only because it isn't quite so flamboyantly, stark-ravingingly odd. It is, in fact, a very pleasant piece of summer-tinged, psychedelic pop. Perfect for those coming winter months in fact. Perhaps. In any case, it's upbeat, with ringing guitars and soaring vocals. Laguna even throws in some sweet flute melodies for good measure. It gives the impression of being quite simple, and indeed it is rather hard to pick apart all the various workings of the song. Suffice to say that we have plenty of guitars, drums, flutes, organs, layered vocal harmonies and probably more. It's all very uplifting, which, when considered next to some of the quite frankly disturbing stuff (giant mice, magic fairies and new-born babies) left on the full-length, is wonderful. Once again, I have failed quite spectacularly to discern much of the lyrics beyond a muttered something about cowboys and sugar shacks. Perhaps, in retrospect, it's for the best, based on what can be discerned on the album.

'Stud Boy' is the b-side that is released alongside 'Sugar Shack', and while it is not quite as good as 'Sugar Shack', it is short, sweet and only slightly odd. It also has what sounds like a vibraphone, merrily doing its thing, and the flute from 'Sugar Shack' returns to lend its airy, almost ethereal presence to proceedings. Also included is the album version of 'Sugar Shack', for those completists out there. It's slightly longer.

So, happy, poppy but still woozy. It's probably also drug-influenced (I'd be surprised if it wasn't), but at least 'Sugar Shack' spares us the musical come-downs or the lyrical mind-fucks of the album. This track is all about drifting off in a pleasant, blithely carefree haze, bathed in a warm, setting sun (the one on the CD sleeve will do quite nicely).
