Review: 'BIRDPEN'
'BREAKING PRECEDENT(single)'

-  Label: 'Les Oreilles Bleues Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '15th August 2008'

Our Rating:
This single is taken from Birdpen's debut album On/Off/Safety/Danger due for release in October 2008.

Birdpen are a three piece who formed in 2004. They refuse to say where they come from but, with shades of the 60s cult TV series ‘The Prisoner’, they give their location only as ‘The Village’ somewhere in the UK.

They are, however, prepared to reveal that they "exist on the perimeters of a destructive world they do not feel a part of".

Despite this self conscious rage against the machine they still opt for an working within panic pop conventions, sounding like the missing link between Interpol and XTC.

The song is catchy and quirky with words they could have been cut and paste from newspaper headlines: "blind instinct....rapid drought......prescence expected now".

The charm of its jerky rhythms is intriguing enough to make me keen to hear how it fits within the full length album.
