Our Rating:
"Bad Ideas" is one of those that defies categorisation: scuzzy, rough, loose agit-rock was my attempt. The group themselves prefer the delightfully odd "junk funk" or frankly terrifying "death jazz". Describing the "music" isn't much easier either: the simple hook worms its way into your brain, an overwhelming bass that throbs like a disgruntled elephant with a cold.

Andy Huxley's vocals come across as disinterested dirty hip-hop mumblings: all I could make out was the chanted backing of "motherfu...fnah fnah fnah", which gives it a laughable "Viz" quality to it (anyone who appreciates Finbarr Saunders and his Double Entendres will get the reference). There's a guitar in there somewhere too, weaving its depraved way all over the place, constrained by no-one and nothing. The basic "melody" (not that one can really call it that) sounds remarkably similar to the opening bars to Clinic's "The Second Line", albeit given a good roughing up and thrown in the canal.

The b-side, "The Worm", opens with a meandering double bass improvising into the dark void. The song seems positively reluctant to do anything else. Embracing the uneasy emptiness, the bass flits, free jazz style, to its black heart's content. One minute and thirty seconds in, with the listener about to reach for the off switch, a Spanish guitar and spoken-word lyrics decide to join the wake. It's funereal, weird and decidedly creepy. The Jaws theme comes in somewhere, which does little to dispel the deep sense of foreboding. Breathy sighs, halfway between death-rattle and orgasm, punctuate the unease. So "death jazz" it is...

It's just a shame that there's no "fucking weird" category.
