Review: 'TRUTH ABOUT FRANK, THE'
'Murder Sleep'

-  Label: 'LYF'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: 'May 2010'-  Catalogue No: 'LYFCD002'

Our Rating:
Darkly atmospheric from start to finish, this EP by the (rather naffly-named) The Truth About Frank (it simply doesn't fit with the music, and says 'fey juangly indie' rather than 'sinister electro noise') exudes radiating waves of unease and tension from the outset. It's semi-ambient electronica, but from a very dark place.

The monotonous clank that provides a sense of rhythm to 'Myan Karzan's Little Empire' is pure industrial, and the snarling robotic vocals on the same track are dehumanized and unsettling. If it sounds from this description like they're trying just that bit too hard, think again: it's too warped and bleak to be dismissed as mere posturing. It's the kind of nasty underground avant-noise that falls somewhere between Non and Throbbing Gristle.

'Welcome' makes the listener feel anything but, an endless looped sample of 'Fly Me To the Moon' slowed and slurred like it's been slipped an industrial dose of Ketamine played over a minimal and slightly off-key synth drone that echoes on for over six minutes. It's the soundtrack to a nightmare.

Disturbing, dark stuff.
