Review: 'NIGHTWORKER REVIVAL'
'AMANITA FALLS (EP)'

-  Label: 'BIGCARTEL'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'June 2010'

Our Rating:
Nightworker Revival are a five piece band from the Midlands who specialise in the psychedelic and shoegaze area of rock. ‘Amanita Falls’ is their first release available through big cartel - http://nightworkerrevival.bigcartel.com/.

Whilst this five track E.P. can feel a bit samey at times, I think it is an excellent first release and one that does the band justice. The opening track ‘Taking Rainbows From The Sky’ sets out exactly what they are and what they do. With a steady, hypnotic drum beat, and several guitars creating a layered and textured swirling tapestry, whilst Matt Hodgkiss’ vocals evince a dreamy mood “Searching for the faces in my dreams”. The vocals are indistinct, being buried way down in the mix, and usually I would find this off putting and would be looking for a lyric sheet, but here this suits the mood perfectly.

‘Floating in Mercury’ is more of the same “We are floating in mercury, and I’m still crazy”. In the right mood, this is one you can close your eyes to and float away on!

‘Around Echoes You Orbit’ is slower, but equally dreamy, and did I catch an almost Doors-type guitar line in there at one point?

‘A Kesey Graduation’ storms out of the speakers with guitars at the forefront. Suddenly without realising, you are on the final track ‘Manmade Saviour’, which again creates a dense wall of sound.

I really liked this E.P., but on the niggly front just wished that they’d included a lyric sheet so I could find out what was going on. On the strength of this debut, I’ll be checking out their future releases.
