The press release helpfully informs me that these 'enigmatic bass-tronauts' were 'pushing the limits of dubstep, grime and contemporary bass music before they were officially "baptized."' Ok.... they've also been praised by Mary Anne Hobbs. I can't say that's much of a recommendation in my book, but it matters not. What matters is the music.... and this is damn good.
Slow, expansive instrumental trip-hop with agitated, glitchy beats flickering and snaking through a soundscape shaped by yawning, cavernous, subsonic bass frequencies, the four tracks here are simultaneously laid-back and twitchy. Rather like Leeds glitchtronica duo worriedaboutsatan, Downliners Sekt have produced a record that casts long shadows, and is dark and mildly unsettling, yet never for a second it the experience unenjoyable. Sit back and let it drift over you....
