'JESUS STOLE MY GIRLFRIEND'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '26th July 2010'-  Catalogue No: 'SOHOCD3'

Our Rating:
It's hard to imagine where Rock'n'Roll would be without the bible, the old testament especially. If you don't believe me, ask the Pixies. It's mostly down to the sacred chapters from said tome that we got some of the best (and most psychotic) moments from their classic early trio of albums.

Funny I should mention Black Francis and co, actually, as Queensland, Australia's VIOLENT SOHO are produced (with the expected ear-splitting clarity) by former Pixies desk man Gil Norton (see also Foo Fighters, Echo & The Bunnymen and many more) and their new single 'Jesus Stole My Girlfriend' even has elements of Pixies at their most prowling and deranged. Hell, their singer Luke Boerdam (one hopes in true Rock'n'Roll style this is pronounced 'Boredom') even has great Francis-style ability to scream. Always a good thing in rock. He also has more hair than Mr. Francis. Another major attribute.

But I digress. 'Jesus Stole My Girlfriend' apparently comes from the more direct effect of having the God squad break up your relationship. VS were once the church band at their local Pentecostal tabernacle and Luke's girl was allegedly snaffled by the man upstairs along the way, in effect leaving behind the lure of the flesh for a more spiritual course in life. Cue lots of gnashing of teeth, several crates of beer and a damn good idea for a song. It would take a long time to come to fruition, though. Although VS look unfeasibly young, they have apparently been slogging round their native Australia for five years in support of a self-released album before said LP fell into the hands of Thurston Moore and Rick Rubin. Only then could you realistically say “the rest is history.” Or at least history in the making.

For all that, 'Jesus Stole My Girlfriend' is hard and heavy, but not as good as their fellow Brisbane hard'n'heavy contemporaries Giants of Science. And certainly not as good as Vinny Peculiar's song 'Jesus Stole My Girlfriend.' Oh well. Them's the breaks, I guess.
