Our Rating:
God, I hate the Bee Gees. Even without the cringe-inducing memories of my mother dancing around the kitchen to the 'mice men' when I was a child, I’d still hate the Bee Gees. It's not just the squeaky voices, or the big teeth and bouffant hair. After all, teeth and hair don't translate sonically, although squeaky voices unfortunately do. Horrible, flappy white soft funk disco just hits a nerve with me. So why the hell anyone would wan to cover anything by the Bee Gees is beyond me. That goes double for Stayin' Alive.

In fairness, Marlin's strolling, gravel-voiced rendition is so far removed from the original that it transforms it into an entirely different song, and it's with no small surprise that I find myself having to admit that it's pretty damn good. The shuffling drums and wild brass that wouldn't sound out of place on a Foetus track really do work wonders. Perhaps you can polish a turd after all, and it looks as though if anyone can, Mike Marlin can.
