Good Weather for an Airstrike is one man, Winchester-based Tom Honey, although on here, he's joined by Jamie Brett, who lends vocals to two of the three tracks.
"A Winter" is the first of a two-part concept-based project, and is essentially an ambient piece, consisting of three tracks all of which are long, soothing and cinematic. But more than merely conceptual, "A Winter" is also functional, and was recorded with the intention of providing easy listening that helps to induce sleep because Tom suffers from tinnitus which can often lead to his experiencing difficulty in sleeping. Calming it may be, but it's by no means dull. Instead, "A Winter" is rich in tone and texture, subtlety and depth.
Beginning with a long, slow fade-in from silence before introducing sonorous string sounds and long drones that wash over the aural receptors and building through a succession of undulations the three tracks flow together to create an atmosphere of tranquillity. 'Broken' is a suitably epic closer, a ten-minute expanse of sound, sculpted and smoothed to create minimalist perfection. It's not just the sounds that are important, but the spaces in between, too. Silence is an integral element of the overall sound of the tracks here. It's a rare thing, and silence is, indeed, golden.

As the final sounds taper away a full ten seconds or more before the track actually ends, I am wide awake, but calm and at ease with the world.
