The much-anticipated debut from Wigan rock n' rollers GLASSHEADS has finally arrived. A free download-only affair, it's the first of three singles earmarked for release during the first half of the year through sleeve designer Brian Cannon's Microdot label (an offshoot of his Microdot design company).
Cannon's work with another Wigan band, THE VERVE, remains his most prominent, but the promotional artwork for 'The Error Of Your Ways' is arguably as impressive. The track itself, although not as hook-laden and infectious as other offerings from these dark horses, still oozes quality.
Delivered with conviction, and blessed with the wisdom of 20/20 hindsight, 'Error' typically showcases the four-piece group's preoccupation with life's casualties and the path to self destruction, as well as their focus on matters emotional. It's serious stuff, and both the epic production (courtesy of former Tansads guitarist and creative force John Kettle; yet another talented Wiganer) and the absence of an addictive chorus only serves to further highlight the band's uncompromising approach. The intro/outro lick is strangely reminiscent of the brilliant Madness single 'My Girl',
Those of you who remain unconvinced may like to note that the accompanying video features scenes of full female nudity, thanks to the gorgeous local girl who's seen striking a series of dark poses in the bath.
All in all, 'Error' is an unassuming introduction to these highly-endorsed and (rightly) hotly-tipped contenders: it's practically the only song in their setlist that's not representative of the band's breathtaking melodic powers. Regardless, GLASSHEADS remain ones to watch as the 2011 battle for regognition hits fever pitch
