Following on from his highly idiosyncratic - and strangely good - cover of The Bee Gees' 'Stayin' Alive,' the enigmatic man behind the beard and yellow-tinted glasses, Mike Marlin, offers 'Play That Game' as a taster for his imminent album.
Like its predecessor, it's a quirky affair. Marlin's grizzly baritone sounds like Chris Rea if he was cooler, and musically, 'Play that Game' incorporates elements of classic rock and 60s pop and then slaps the listener with a fat sax break that really sparkles. Really, it's better than it sounds.
'I don't get paid for my bad behaviour,' Marlin comments in the refrain to the flipside 'Hit the Button,' which comes on like a cross between ZZ Top and Timbuk 3 with some 60s psych thrown in. It stomps along nicely, and if anything is a better - and catchier - song than the single itself. It may be completely uncool to say this - he's hardly hip, and his target audience isn't the kids and it's probably not people like me, either, but I rather dig what Marlin's doing, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the album shapes up.
