Review: 'Toploader'
'Never Stop Wondering'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '21st March 2011'

Our Rating:
Never mind the how, it's all about the why: why did the PR company working for the band, who've recently reformed after a long time away, send me a copy of their comeback single? There's nothing in my resume to suggest I like Toploader. Possibly because I absolutely detest Toploader. I mean, they make me tense with loathing. 'Achilles Heel' got on my tits, but could be overlooked. Then they came on with 'Dancing in the Moonlight', from which there was no escape. It was everything I hated about, well, the world. People. Pop. A summery party tune, beloved by bozo students AND middle aged mums dancing with glasses of wine in their hands, it was a high ranker on the irritant scale.

So forget 'never stop wondering': I never started wondering about Toploader and simply breathed a sigh of relief when they disappeared from the radar. Turns out that they reunited in 2009 and two years hence, have an album ready to launch. This is the first single.

In fairness, it doesn't induce murderous thoughts. That's because it's largely forgettable. It also sounds very like U2. 'Beautiful Day', to be precise. As performed by Keane, crossed with Simple Minds. And with a riff pilfered from Kylie's 'Love at First Sight' thrown in for good measure. Yes, twelve years to create a song that's a mash-up of a heap of other songs. Nice work. Still, it's without doubt their best work to date. Whether the world is actually craving a Toploader comeback is a different matter...
