Review: 'Braids'
'Lemonade / Plath Heart'

-  Label: 'Kanine Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '14th March 2011'

Our Rating:
At six and a half minutes in length, 'Lemonade' is one long single, especially as it comprises only one half of a double A side package. Still, it gives Canadian quartet Braids ample room to demonstrate what they're all about. Over gentle looping ripples of sound, it slowly but surely builds in mass and density until it's a sweeping surge of texture amidst a wash of reverb. Describing exactly how it's so arresting is like trying to catch the essence of a dream. Attempting to do so would only spoil the magic.

Meanwhile, 'Plath Heart' is a beguilingly quirky number, beginning as it does with a chiming post-rock intro before evolving into a shimmering slice of offbeat electro that falls somewhere between Kate Bush and The Sugarcubes. It's pretty cool - which pretty much sums up the release as a whole, in fact.
