The third - and final - single from Mike Marlin's debut album, 'Nearly Man' sounds, well, rather like an album track that's been given a bit of a going over to jazz it up to single standard (and here the jazzing comes courtesy of Barry Grint, who’s worked with a whole host of names from The Beach Boys to Jessie J, although that’s no recommendation).
There's nothing fundamentally wrong with 'No Place Like Home' as a song, which catches Mr Marlin in a contemplative mood, but it's hardly the best advert for his talents. It's pretty middle of the road fare, and lacks any really memorable features. Worst of all, the reworking strips the song of the laid-back, simple appeal of the album version.
Flipside 'Beautiful Girl', on the other hand, sounds like an Iggy Pop ballad and is actually pretty cool.
