Review: 'Huron'
'Mary Celeste'

-  Album: 'Mary Celeste' -  Label: 'Copro'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '8/08/11'

Our Rating:
This is British bruisers Huron's second album and is an ear shattering dose of hard hitting metal that pulls no pretty punches but delivers 100% on the grinding riffs and aggressive vocals that made bands such as Machine Head, COC and Pantera such an attractive proposition in the late 90's and early 00's.

Avoiding the tech-metal pitfalls that can over complicate a lot of metal around today, Huron keep it (relatively) simple and there is a lot to be said of the guitar work on this album. The title track in particular rolls in on circling riffs and vocally the album never lets up on intensity, in both the lyric and delivery stakes.

The recording itself is very raw and a matter of contrasts. The vocals sound brilliantly recorded, really capturing every scream and bitter lyric, but the guitars in particular sound very raw - in the vein of True Norwegian Metal. I'm into this, but I guess it's a matter of taste.

Relentlessly dark, eternally hard working (according to the press release at least) and devoid of any of the emo, pussy soaked shit that so many bands layer their material with these days, Huron are a breath of fresh air. Well, I say fresh, I actually mean whisky soaked, dangerous and stinking of stale sweat but, hell, that's just how we like it!

This is the real fucking deal: if you like your metal rough round the edges and just a little bit nasty, get on board.
