Our Rating:
'Wake Up Colossus' is one dizzyingly chaotic album, a non-stop collision of stop-start stutters and halting, jolting time signatures. It's not lo-fi, but it is back to basics in its production: the guitar has an overloading sound that vibrates the speakers, and there's an immediacy to the sound that's seriously attention grabbing.

It's the only thing that is basic, though, as the drum 'n' guitar duo throw everything into every song, and the music's as crazy as the song titles ('Whoop Whoop'; 'It Could be Nicer Being Red'; 'This is Life Bubbly Hog' say it all, really). 'My Robot Garden' is built on a heavy throbbing drone with the vocals pitch-shifted down, while 'Ping Pong Miracle' is a wild frenzy of instrumentation that leaps all over the shop. It's not since I discovered That Fucking Tank that I've heard a two-piece make quite such a full-on, solid racket.

Quirky, jerky and frenetic, it's certainly not music you can dance to: and with the rapid and unpredictable tempo changes, any attempt to do so would leave you flailing like an epileptic with a finger in an electric socket. But I'm not one to dance anyway, and in packing three song's worth of ideas and riffs into every track SchnAAk have produced an album that sounds fresh and exciting, off-the-wall, whacky and fun.
