Dark Captain may have truncated their name – Dark Captain Light Captain was something of a mouthful – but are still producing haunting music, at least on the strength of their latest offering.
‘Submarines’ blends wistful harmonies with a dreamy, drifting wash of sound amidst which an urgent guitar pesters somewhere down in the mix. The overall result is something that falls somewhere between The Cure and shoegaze, while existing in an entirely different space and has the capacity to transport the listener into a small melancholy corner of their own mind.
B-side ‘Bellcurve’ is similarly sedate, the vocals and instrumentation blurring together to forge a drifting sonic ebb and flow, which contrasts with the busy – yet still appropriately restrained – percussion. Beautiful.
