'LAZY'

-  Label: 'SKINT RECORDS'
-  Genre: 'Genre 1' -  Release Date: 'April 2002'-  Catalogue No: 'SKINT 74'

Our Rating:

"LAZY" features the legendary DAVID BYRNE, once the singer with influential, seminal (yes!) art-punk heroes TALKING HEADS, who has continued to produce interesting work, both solo and as a collaborator with the likes of BRIAN ENO over the years.

This might not be up there in terms of arty weirdness a la "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts", but it's still an excellent vehicle for Byrne's instantly recognisable voice, crammed with vocal tics and mannerisms. He adds depth to a track that infects you with its' laid back groove.

Basically, "Lazy" is dance music with added cerebral fascination: not just hands in the air, pump it out for the clubs gear. Musically, it follows adroitly on from TALKING HEADS; both in terms of the style and character-based storytelling and in the way it takes a groove and toys with it.

Of course, it's important to remember that TALKING HEADS' rhythm section also branched out into dance music down the years (even producing HAPPY MONDAYS), perhaps adding fuel to the fire for the argument of dance as the new punk? Whatever, "Lazy" exudes the kind of individuality that was TALKING HEADS' watchword.

With the record already gaining heavy and enthusiastic airplay on daytime radio, its' success is assured, and deservedly too. Hell, give me this over most brainless dance music any day.

Fulfilling a lifetime ambition to work with DAVID BYRNE, X-PRESS 2'S ASHLEY BEEDLE has also secured one of the great man's finest vocals for many years. Ten years back, your reviewer would never have considered listening to "dance" music, but "Lazy" is another of those great genre barrier breakers that we all need. And more often.

Good stuff!
