Review: 'Marlin, Mike'
'This Town'

-  Label: 'Amp Music Productions'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '23rd January 2012'-  Catalogue No: 'AMP013DD'

Our Rating:
Former nearly man Mike Marlin heralds the arrival of his second album, 'Man on the Ground' with the second single to to be taken from it, and like its predecessor 'The Magician' it sees Marlin pushing in different directions.

The input of producer Catherine Marks, who's worked with Alan Moulder and Flood and artists including The Vaccines, Interpol, Foals and PJ Harvey is very much in evidence here, the sound being simultaneously full yet brittle. A driving bassline propels 'This Town', over which layers of synths settle around Marlin's distinctive gravel-laden vocals. The chorus sounds rather like 'No I in Threesome': Marlin can't help sounding more like Chris Rea than Paul Banks, but don't let that put you off, because ultimately it sounds like Mike Marlin, and moreover, sounds like a songwriter just hitting his stride.
