Our Rating:
Yes this lot think they are on The Edge of Different which of course means they aren't that different at all, right? Well not far off as it happens and they go for the 'twee to the max, aren't we kooky and odd' approach. Actually, it's about as odd as liking Cath Kidston stuff is.

I'm guessing this album is aimed at fans of Lykke Li and Sigur Ros and that sort of stuff even though they describe themselves as being "Steampop" in which case I guess they mean music to play in the steam room?

The opening song 'I'm Wide Awake It's Morning Bright Eyes' has some good harmonium before the weird vocals come in and sort of spoil it. As for why you would describe someone as being your Goji Berry friend as they do on 'King Stone' is kind of beyond me, but then I don't get a lot of this album as it is trying far too hard to be odd without ever actually sounding odd, if you get my drift.

'Take off Your Glasses' is a good example of the problem as the lyrics list what the singer wants his conquest to take off from glasses to lips to eyelashes which could imply stripping for sex until he keeps on with the list getting longer and more odd. Sadly, though, nothing about the tune is odd enough to go with the lyrics.

Still at least they are into brevity as this 8-song album only lasts 20 minutes so it doesn't outstay its welcome in any respect. If they truly want to be considered different or odd perhaps they should listen to heaps of Gong and Soft Machine albums and then fuse them to something modern, but until then this album is not different enough to be at the edge of anything but the slush pile teetering on the edge, merely unsure if it should fall in or stay out.
