Review: 'SKY LIFE, THE'
'Caves'

-  Label: 'Deep Elm Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '17th October 2012'

Our Rating:
On their Facebook page, this Canadian three-piece proudly proclaim themselves to be "simple musicians singing about simple things".

Consequently, on this record, their third, they seem to go out of their way to be as understated and unassertive as possible. The soft rock tunes are quiet, melodic and delicate with mostly acoustic arrangements including piano. It's inoffensive but ultimately unmemorable.

You keep expecting something more exciting to happen but nothing does. For example, a track called Son To The Seed only bursts into life at the end but then fades out just as quickly as if they had second thoughts about rocking out so conspicuously.

As a consequence of this, nothing is allowed to disturb the melancholy, introspective Travis-style mood of the record as a whole. Despite stating on the opening track (Ask Anything) "I'm ready to open up a bit" singer Justin Carter sounds earnest and tender-hearted but does very little of what you could call soul bearing.

This is a weakness for songs which set out to explore the emotional depths metaphorically expressed in the album title.

One track is entitled Get Up And Go and this is precisely what this album lacks.
