Review: 'Disappears'
'Kone (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave'

Our Rating:
Less than a year on from their colossal ‘Pre-Language’ album (their third full-length in as many years), Disappears return with a 12” EP with a running time that’s comparable to an album, with the promise of another album imminent. With just three tracks spanning over half an hour, it’s all about the lead track, which appears in its full-length and edited form (which is still ten minutes long, mind), bolstered with another miniature epic track, ‘Kontakt’.

‘Kone’ weaves and wanders, swaying in a towering wash of haunting, spaced-out guitar. The rhythm slopes along nonchalantly through the lengthy intro before a chunky bass kicks in, alongside the heavily-delayed vocals. The slapback is positively disorientating as they bounce around against a sparse, choppy guitar. It’s a sharp contrast to the swampy rhythm section and contrives to create a richly atmospheric post-punk epic as it plays out over the course of 15 minutes.

The percussion is more prominent on ‘Kontakt’, a bleak slab of postindustrial nihilism that’s pared back yet dense and hypnotic, courtesy of a fuzzy, low-slung bassline. The blank vocals are reminiscent of Michael Gira in his early days, and in conjunction with the abrasive guitars, builds a monochrome grey space that’s intense and claustrophobic, until it takes off on a shimmering western adventure.

Weighty, stark, imaginative, ambitious and utterly bloody brilliant.
