Review: 'Vladislav Delay'
'Kuopio'

-  Album: 'Kuopio' -  Label: 'Raster-Noton'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Catalogue No: 'R-N 144'

Our Rating:
Vladislav Delay is one man, Sasu Rapati, and his releases document an extended exploration of his surroundings in sound. ‘Kuopio’ is his second full-length album, consisting of eight lengthy instrumental works that draw on a range of electronic styles to forge something unique.

Beats bounce back and forth, positions and time-signatures shifting and sliding beneath currents of synth that oscillate and glide. Sustained drones underpin shuffling, glitched and irregular rhythms, notably on the sparse ‘Hetkonen’. ‘Avanne’ is more overtly beat-driven and bumps and pops solidly, and elsewhere, swampy analogue sounds fill the wide open sonic space that represents the Finnish landscape that bears so heavily on Sasu Ripatti’s consciousness. ‘Kuopio’ is a calculated and meticulous exercise in aural alienation.
